Heres a quick update on the greenhouse aquaponics system in Delaware.  Unfortunately I havent been down there frequently enough to take care of it as much as Id like, but Ive got a radial flow filter built, and I just need a larger pump and tubing to hook up the sump tank and second grow bed.  Ill be working on that in the next few months.


My buddy Graham in Trenton, NJ has been working on his indoor IBC tank setup.  Here are some photos that I took.





Also in Trenton, my friend Jon built this really cool bookshelf with an integrated fish tank.  I talked to him about making the bookshelf above the fish tank into a small grow bed with lights mounted under the shelf above.  That would make a slick bookshelf / aquaponics system.  Check it out!

GFA unique system overcomes several limiting factors that restrain the output and effectiveness of fish farmers.


The accumulation of inorganic nitrogen and organic waste products in intensive fish culture systems is one of the major limiting factors preventing further intensification. Inorganic nitrogen (especially ammonia and nitrite) is toxic to fish and accumulates in the pond water through excretion of ammonia by the fish and by breakdown of organic solids. Most of the treatment systems used in todays aquaculture facilities are designed to facilitate the growth of nitrifying bacteria which convert ammonia to nitrate. A drawback of the ammonia removal by means of nitrification is the subsequent increase in nitrate in the culture system. High nitrate concentrations ought to be prevented since, at high concentrations, nitrate has a toxic effect of fish and might be converted to nitrite with an even higher toxicity. Daily flushing the ponds at rates of up to 25% of the total system volume is generally practiced to avoid nitrate build up.
However, such a practice often causes considerable environmental impact and is prohibited in many countries due to environmental and public health considerations. With respect to organic waste products, most aquaculture facilities are designed to mechanically remove the organic waste from the culture tank. Often, the concentrated organic waste is discharged from these facilities without post-treatment and this practice together with the discharge of nitrate-rich effluents is considered a major limitation in the development of intensive fish culture systems.
Due to the need for daily water exchange, existing intensive fish culture systems are situated in areas with an ample clean water supply. Thus, for economical reasons concerned with water supply and discharge, culture systems for marine fish (including recirculating systems) are exclusively situated in the vicinity of the sea. Marine fish farming, whether practiced in seacages or in land-based farms, is often subject to intensive public debate as the farms discharge nutrient-rich effluents in coastal waters of often heavily populated areas. Sustainable farming of marine fish is therefore a major challenge in todays aquaculture development.


Our system developed by Prof. van Rijn and G.F.A Advanced Systems is a zero-discharge system suitable for the culture of freshwater as well as marine edible and ornamental fish. No water exchange takes place and water addition is limited to compensate for evaporation losses only. The system reduces inorganic nitrogen and organic wastes from pond water by means of the induction of several microbial processes among which: (1) fermentation: the conversion of complex organic waste compound to low molecular weight organic compounds, (2) nitrification: the conversion of ammonia to nitrate and (3) denitrification: the conversion of nitrate to nitrogen gas and the conversion of low molecular weight organic compounds to carbon dioxide.

The 105 gallon system set up in my friends apartment in Philly was disassembled yesterday.  Well be moving most of the components to the greenhouse that were building in Wilmington, Delaware.  We already have a 330 gallon IBC tank waiting, and were going to be building a PVC hoop house.  Well be attaching the grow bed from the apartment system to the IBC system as well.  Also, I have obtained some old windows to make some coldframes at the same location.  Lots of excitement coming this Spring, but it was a little sad to take apart the system that I had worked so hard and long on.  We did harvest about 2 supermarket bags full of kale, and I filetd the tilapia we had living in the apartment system.  Im sure Ill have tons of updates and photos from the Wilmington garden this Spring.

The system at my buddy Saqibs apartment is doing well.  Saqib was away for a week for work, so a roommate was feeding the fish.  We think that he overfed our tilapia, Zeus, because the water is filled with brown algae.  Ive read online that this algae is not really caused by sunlight, but rather by overfeeding the fish.  High nitrates also lead to this type of algae.  Well be feeding Zeus less from now on, and I plan to clean out the filter to make sure everything is nice and healthy.



Saqib added some small lights to the system, and the plants look to be doing well.  Well get those lights up on chains soon.  In another 2 weeks, well be switching to some ornamental fish for the tank, and at that point well clean the tank and hang the lights.  Hopefully, that will help keep the algae in control, and help with the veggie growth.

The Aqua Farm hasnt been doing very well.  The air pump seems to have died.  For a while it was not making very good bubbles, and the water was not reaching the upper tray.  The water wouldnt circulate, and the system was not functioning properly.  I tried cutting the airline tube at different lengths to make better bubbles, and it seemed to work, but eventually the pump stopped making any bubbles at all.  Im going to ask Back to the Roots if theyll send me a new air pump.  I may also try using an aquarium air pump next to the fish tank to supply the bubbles for the air lift.  Either way, Im not happy with the system right now.  Im hoping that I can tinker with it and make it work better.  On the bright side, I regrew some green onions in one of the grow pots, and ate them in a tasty turkey soup (Thanksgiving leftovers!).

Edit 10 Jan 2014 - Back to the Roots is going to send me a replacement air pump.  They recommended placing it outside the system, sitting vertically next to the tank.  Theyre also sending me new seed packets, and suggested that for the basil and lettuce I may need more light.  Great customer service!

I checked out the system this week, and it seems to be doing well.  The brown algae in the water is slowly disappearing.  The veggies are growing well, though the strawberry seeds that I scattered in one pot don’t seem to be growing too quickly.  My friend hadn’t checked the chemicals recently, so I did while I was there.  The pH was very low (<6), but everything else looked ok.  The ammonia was 0.5ppm.  Nitrite was zero, and Nitrate was 160+ ppm.


I added 6 capfuls of API’s pH up.  I decided that I didn’t want to rely on my friend checking the pH and adjusting, so I added enough pH up to bump up the pH to around 7.  Normally I wouldn’t want to raise it more than 0.2 per day, but I didn’t want to risk losing the bacteria and have to re-cycle the system.  My friend added a little water the next day, and checked the pH.  It was about 7 – 7.2, which is ideal.  Hopefully this weekend I can visit for a few hours to clean the canister filter, and plan out new fish that we want to put in the fish tank.  We’d also like to mount some small lights that we have onto chains above the grow bed.  Another issue is that the water draining is somewhat loud, so I want to figure out a way to muffle the draining water.  Here’s some pictures and a video from my visit to the system.

Commercial Aquaponics


Ive been trying to compare the pros and cons of different types of aquaponic systems recently.  Right now, Im working on constructing a 105 gallon setup at my friends apartment.  Were making a simple flood and drain system, with a 50 gallon grow bed.  Filling that grow bed will require almost 200 Liters of expanded clay or some other media.  All that media is going to double the cost of our system.  We were thinking about alternative methods, such as expanded shale or even something like legos (but we dont have nearly 50 Gallons of legos).  The cost of buying a grow media for a large grow bed is so high, that it really got me thinking about alternative systems.  Heres a list of pros and cons of various aquaponic systems.  If you know anything that I havent listed, please leave a comment and Ill add it to my list and credit you.


Media Bed Systems
Chift Pist, Simple Flood and Drain (Ebb and Flow), Constant Flood (Continuous Flow)
Pros
· Self Cleaning - The grow media filters out the fish waste
· A media bed performs three (3) filtering functions:
    · mechanical (solids removal)
    · mineralization (solids breakdown and return to the water) 
    · bio-filtration
· Media provides better plant support and is more closely related to traditional soil gardening because there is a media to plant into

Cons
· Expensive growing media

Pros
· Pump is in sump tank away from fish and wastes
· Water level in fish tank remains constant
· Great if you have a tall fish tank
· Larger water volume because of sump
Cons
· Extra equipment required (sump tank)
· Must have tall fish tank or stand
· Can take up larger footprint

Simple Flood and Drain / Ebb and Flow
Pros
· The grow bed can be separated from the fish reservoir
· Simple design - Only two major system components - lower cost
· It is easy to understand and learn
· Great if you have a tall fish tank
Cons
· Requires a timer or bell syphon
· Pump is in fish tank, exposed to fish and waste
· Water level in tank fluctuates a little


Simple Flood and Drain system


Constant Flood / Continuous Flow
Pros
· Same as the Simple Flood and Drain, except when you remove the timer, the system is constantly flooding
Cons
· Pump is in fish tank
· Plant roots can become waterlogged, and areas of the grow bed can become stagnant and anaerobic as the flow of fresh water through the bed moves around any blockages


Constant Flood system


Deep Water Culture (DWC)
Pros
· Resistant against water temperature and pH fluctuations
· Excellent root development due to easy access to oxygen
· There is plenty of surface area for the beneficial bacteria to grow
· Very good for lettuces and leafy vegetables – used extensively by commercial farmers
Cons
· Requires additional filtration to remove solids
· Large plants such as tomatoes, cucumbers, etc. can be difficult, if not impossible, to support


Deep Water Culture system


Nutrient Film Technique (NFT)
Pros
· Both components (fish and plants) may be decoupled from each other whenever required and can/do operate independently of each other if required.  I believe this is important in a commercial situation because it allows fish or plant production to continue when and if there are any problems with the other component
Cons
· Water susceptible to temperature fluctuations
· Requires additional filtration to remove solids
· Roots that die and detach from plants can cause blockages in water flow
· NFT is only really suitable for certain types of plants, generally leafy green vegetables, larger plants will have root systems that are too big and invasive, or they become too heavy for the lightweight growing gutters

Eric Maundu is an engineer in West Oakland who uses Arduino controllers to automate his aquaponics gardens. Its a pretty impressive setup in an otherwise barren industrial lot.  A friend of mine, Donna Raef, visited with Eric at his garden in January.  She had this to say about her visit:

"He is dedicated to technology more than aquaponics so it took me a bit off guard when at first he said he didnt care about farming or aquaponics. He only has one aquaponic system going and he monitors it through a computer system that tracks all kinds of levels, takes pictures, etc and compiles the data. It was a very impressive system.  His philosophy seemed to be geared toward educating kids about science, math and technology through aquaponic systems with this kind of data collection. He has after school programs and other educational programs in some of the schools. It was a really good way to see farming/food production from that angle. He was pessimistic about just using aquaponics alone to inspire people to grow food or to get kids interested in it. His focus was really on the technology of gathering information and trying to make it more productive through technology. I am going to put him in contact with the greenhouse I worked at in Amarillo and hopefully he can come out there and teach the kids some stuff about the technology/aquaponics--he seemed really interested in that idea. I forgot to take a picture, sorry!"

So, you want to set up an Aquaponics system? Dont worry though sounds complicated it is really an easy job. If you have some basic knowledge about the system you are ready to go. I believe you have the on the basics of the system).

However, there are some important point which you might still interest you. Let me mention five such things which will help you attain some amazing results.



Proper Location: the place has a crucial impact on the success or the failure of you aquaponics system. It is highly important for the plants and fish to grow. Factors such as optimum temperature (not too hot not too cold), presence of natural lights (for the preparation of food for the plants), absence of external harsh weather are very important. Make sure no chemical of other harmful substances are present in the water. It can kill both y our plants and fish.



Oxygenate the water: Oxygenating is essential for the fish. Lack of oxygen can make your whole system fall apart. Oxygenate daily to make you fish happy. Happier the fish better the output of the system.


Choosing your fish accordingly: The aquaponics system normally works with any kind of fish. Yet, there are some restriction on the type of fish you can grow depending on the law of the state. It is for your best interest that you check the laws of your state before choosing the fish. Here is an article you can read about the best fish options for your aquaponic system.

Height of the system: Make sure the system doesnt go about your waist level. That is the best height so you dont need to bend over while harvesting. It will make the daily care routine easier to implement.

Additives: Generally in an aquaponics system the fish provide the nutrition for the plants and generally you dont need to add anything from outside. But, there are cases when the fish will not be able to provide enough nutrients for the plant. In such cases you might need to supply  nutrients in the form of iron, calcium or potassium carbonate.

The aquaponic system itself is a very easy way to achieve a bounty full of veggies and fish in a short period of time. Follow the five steps mentioned above and you will have a great success in your attempt to grow organic foods for your family.

Also, a few days later on December 3rd, we harvested the arugula.  It ended up being too bitter to eat.  We harvested it too late.  Im still learning about growing veggies, but its been a fun experiment!

 Where Should You Place Your Aquaponic System



If you are decided to set up an aquaponic system in which to grow vegetables and fish for you and your family, there are some things which you should know. The types of fish, the seeds which can be propagated and the details about the appropriate water conditions are the basic notions you have to know before venturing in this activity. Once you know that you can start putting all the pieces of the puzzle together. Yet, another question arises: where should you place your aquaponic mini-garden?

The answer is simple: you can put it anywhere you like as long as the place has enough light to offer the plants. As you probably know, the plants need light to prepare their food. If the place where they are put has no or few light, they will be unable to prepare their food, which in time will lead to their death. This is something you do not want! Yet, if you have a room (no matter if it is your kitchen, living room or garage) where there is a moderate light, then there is where you should place your aquaponic garden.

If you live in an area with extreme temperature or weather conditions, there are also some other things you will need to take into consideration. First, the temperature: your fish like to have a moderate temperature (usually varies according to the type of fish you choose), so you should monitor it to meet your fish’s needs. If you are in a desert are a you will need to keep them away from the direct solar rays, while if outside is freezing you will need to make sure that the water is warm enough to provide your fish a good environment.

You should also keep your fish and plants away from chemicals as they are quite sensitive to that, so the room where you keep your cleaning products will not be a great location for them. Rather go for airy places where the plants can feel good and with moderate temperature so that the fish will grow and develop properly.

Hydroponic system is very popular nowadays. Many gardeners are using this system but for a lot of people it is still a mystery. Here in this article we have just decided to demystify the system so if you are interested you can definitely try it out.

Hydro means water. Hydroponic refers to a system where water is used as a source of nutrients to grow plants and no dirt or soil is used. Generally nutrients are added with the water and then the water is circulated through the soil less growth media so that the plants are not deprived of any nutrients.

There are several benefits of this system when compared with the traditional way of gardening. The system helps you to grow more plants in lesser space. The growth rate is faster than traditional soil based gardening. The roots receive good aeration and can absorb nutrients much faster than when in soil. Environmental it helps to stop top-soil erosion.

Some of the plants which thrive in this system are Spinach, Lettuce, Cilantro, Tomato, Peppers, Strawberries etc.

There are two popular hydroponic systems:

1.    Wick system or the passive system: This is by far the easiest and least expensive way. Here you will have a reservoir filled with water and nutrients and another container where you will have the growth media (you can use coconut coir, perlite or vermiculite for this) and plants along with it. The two containers are connected by a wick (you can use a lantern wick for this). The nutrient solution passes through the wick to the growing media. Though it is very simple system it will not work very well for water hungry plants.

2.    Ebb & flow system or the active system: This system is a very popular one. Unlike the earlier system here a pump is attached with the system. The pump first flood the growing media by nutrient rich solution and then drain back the water to the reservoir. This system also helps to provide the soil with fresh oxygen which benefits the root growth. The most popular growing media in this system is rockwool. This system works well with every plant though the cost is much higher than the first one.

In most cases hydroponic system uses inorganic or chemical form of nutrients. But as an organic grower we always recommend you to use organic fertilizers. One of the most interesting ways to use organic fertilizers is switching your hydroponics to an Aquaponic system. Read our earlier article on Aquaponic system here.

Posljednje je desetlje?e akvakultura najbrže rastu?i sektor proizvodnje hrane, ve? je sad svaka tre?a riba koja se na?e na tanjuru uzgojena , manji su troškovi ulaganja, a ve?i je prinos ribe i morskih vrsta.

Uskoro bi zbog ekspanzije ?ovje?anstva, zbog kojeg se svakodnevno izlovljava sve više i više ribe za prehranu, moglo do?i i do nestašice te prehrambene namirnice, ali isto tako i zbog sustavnog zaga?enja mora kemijskim spojevima koji tako?er uništavaju riblju populaciju u prirodi. Zbog toga su mnoge zemlje morale pre?i na kontrolirani uzgoj u kojem je ve?i postotak preživljavanja ribe, bolja iskoristivost hrane te brži napredak ribe, te su razvile akvakulturu, uzgoj organizama u vodenoj sredini pod kontroliranim uvjetima.

Posljednje je desetlje?e akvakultura najbrže rastu?i sektor proizvodnje hrane. Naime, smatra se kako ?e ve? za desetak godina više od polovice prehrambenih proizvoda iz mora biti uzgojeno, a prema nekim podacima, ve? je sad svaka tre?a riba koja se na?e na tanjuru uzgojena. Naime, u akvakulturi su manji troškovi ulaganja, a ve?i prinos ribe i morskih vrsta.
U primjeni akvakulture poseban je svjetski ugled stekao Izrael, koji je uz veliku nestašicu vode upravo u pustinjskim podru?jima napravio velike uzgojne bazene. Izraelska se akvakultura intenzivno razvija te danas obuhva?a uzgoj razli?itih slatkovodnih i morskih vrsta.
Jedna od specifi?nosti izraelske primjene akvakulture su tzv. recirkulacijski sustavi, odnosno sustavi uzgoja akvati?nih organizama u recirkulacijskom protoku vode s minimalnim izmjenama i gubicima vode. Posebno prakti?na metoda u podru?jima udaljenim od izvora vode, osobito pustinjskim predjelima. Svaka se kap vode, naime, maksimalno iskoristi.

U Hrvatskoj akvakulturu najve?im dijelom ?ini uzgoj toplovodnih i hladnovodnih vrsta poput šarana i pastrve u kontinentalnim dijelovima zemlje te uzgoj orade, brancina i školjkaša u marikulturi. Hrvatska je izuzetno bogata vodenim resursima, ali zbog nedostatka tehnologije i slabe zainteresiranosti nije razvila ve?u proizvodnju. Naro?ito bi se u Hrvatskoj moglo poraditi na pove?anju uzgajališta pastrve prema na?elu dobre filtracije vode na farmama, ?ime bi se pove?ala i produktivnost rijeka. Isto tako zbog sve ve?eg zaga?enja morskog ekosustava za o?ekivati je u skoroj budu?nosti da ?e i Hrvatska marikultura morati iskoristiti tehnike recirkulacijskih sustava kako bismo umanjili štetne u?inke kaveznog uzgoja i prekomjeran izlov ribe te tako o?uvali prirodne ljepote našeg mora i biološku raznolikost.

CCRES AQUAPONICS  je nastao u ljeto 2011.godine spajanjem tehnike recirkulacijskih sustava uzgoja riba i klasi?nog hydroponicsa.
Hydroponics je uzgoj biljaka kod kojeg se korjen biljke nalazi u vodi u kojoj su otopljene hranjive tvari i potrebni elementi za njen rast i dozrijevanje.Jedina mana hydroponicsu je ta da se u vodu ubacuju kemijske tvari potrebne za rast biljke.



                                     Ribe koje su korištene u Projektu CCRES AQUAPONICS u sezoni 2011/2012 su 
                                                             japanski KOI šarani, koje smatramo najboljima za proizvodnju.
                                                            

U CCRES AQUAPONICS-u intenzivna aquakultura integrirana je s intenzivnim stakleni?kih hydroponic sustavom uzgoja povr?a. Organske biljne sorte se uzgajaju u plitkim posudama kroz koje cirkulira voda iz bazena s ribama prepuna organskim hranjivim dodacima, koje ispušta riba, koji služe za rast biljaka bez kemijskih dodataka . 
 


Sve vrste salate, crveni i bijeli luk, bosiljak, paprika i krastavci mogu se uzgajati u sustavu.Ovakav uzgoj je idealan za obiteljsku proizvodnju gdje se na nekoliko ?etvornih metara može posti?i neovisnost od velikih proizvo?a?a i trgova?kih lanaca koji serviraju hranu proizvedenu tisu?ama kilometara od krajnjeg kupca. Recirkulacijskim protokom voda koja se vra?a u bazen s ribama u potpunosti je ?ista i idealna za nesmetan rast ribljih vrsta.

Prednosti su:

- neovisnost
- proizvodnja je mogu?a tijekom cijele godine;
- površina za uzgoj je maksimalno iskorištena;
- nema plodoreda;
- stupanj automatizacije je visok;
- biljkama se dodaju organska hranjiva koja su joj potrebna za rast i razvoj u pojedinoj fazi proizvodnje;
- prinosi su znatno ve?i od uzgoja u tlu, kao i razdoblje plodonošenja;
- potrošnja vode, hranjivih tvari i sredstava za zaštitu bilja svedena je na minimum;
- smanjeno je one?iš?enje okoliša;
- smanjena je pojava bolesti i štetnika;
- proizvodnja je mogu?a na površinama gdje nije mogu? uzgoj u tlu zbog primjerice velike one?iš?enosti, zaslanjenosti, kiselosti tla i sl. ;
- manje ljudskog rada pri obradi, kultivaciji, dezinfekciji i sl.
- nusprodukt su ribe koje se uzgajaju do konzumne veli?ine.

  Ovo su bile kratke crtice o projektu CCRES AQUAPONICS, namjenjene isklju?ivo kao informacija.Mišljenja smo da bi ovaj projekt mogao biti pozdravljen od ljudi kojima je dosta pla?anja visokih cijena svih vrsta salata i ribe.Samo pokretanje i proizvodnja idealna su kao hobi za uzgoj u dvorištu iza ku?e, garaži, podrumu ili malom plasteniku.

Naravno da bi ovakav uzgoj mogao pro?i i u intezivnoj proizvodnji.
Na površini od 1 ha mogu?e je proizvesti otprilike 30 000 biljaka raj?ice sa prinosom od oko 400 t/ha, da ne govorim o uzgoju salata koje bi se "brale" svakih 20-tak dana ,što predstavlja puno ve?i prinos u odnosu na uzgoj u tlu na otvorenoj površini. Ovakva proizvodnja predstavlja najintenzivni oblik poljoprivrede, koji sa svojim brojnim prednostima može u potpunosti ispuniti zahtjeve potroša?a za kvalitetnim proizvodom, te proizvo?a?u osigurati dobar posao.

On Sunday, my parents came over to stay... My mom, as usual, goes around the house looking for something to clean, arrange, or replace... Monday night, she noticed a power socket switched to ON in the living room... Without caring where the inserted plugs lead to, she flipped the switch...! :facepalm:

6am in the morning, after 7 hours have passed, I went outside to check my system and realized that it was silent... The pump wasnt pumping water!

25 to 30 guppies died that day... The tilapias were fine as they were saved by the aerators backup power but the water had a slight rotting odor probably due to accumulated ammonia...

 The thick layer of gunk collected at the bottom of the guppy tank may have also contributed to their death as it contains loads of greedy bacteria competing against them for the remaining precious oxygen...

As for the plants, strong winds have been the main problem this few days... After being knocked over by the wind repeatedly, all my okras had given up and none could stand upright properly now... I got to think of a solution fast...

A few years ago, I became interested in mushroom cultivation.  Ive grown oyster mushrooms in the past, and I just harvested some Lions Mane mushrooms that I got for the holidays.  Ive heard some pretty cool things about these mushrooms.  Apparently they can increase you memory and mood.  Paul Stamets is a mushroom expert with some interesting thoughts about Lions Mane.  You may have seen his TED talk, 6 Ways Mushrooms Can Save The World.



I saw Paul give a talk about mushrooms at Burning Man this past year.  The talk was very interesting, and one of the things he mentioned was that Lions Mane promotes growth of cells in the brain.  He also mentioned that they taste like lobster when sauteed with butter.  I had to give it a try! 

I prepared the grow kit around December 27th, and I made a mushroom fruiting box a few days later.  The fruiting box is a large clear bin with holes drilled in it, and moist perlite at the bottom.  This keeps the humidity high so that I dont have to mist the bag as often.  I still fan out the box once or twice a day.

 I harvested on Jan 20th







I sauteed them up with some red onions and butter, and a little salt and pepper.  They were pretty tasty, though not my favorite.  I am excited to harvest another flush in a few weeks, and hopefully I can prepare the next batch a little better, and theyll taste more like lobster!

Our windowfarm is having some ups and downs. The strawberries are growing and starting to turn red.




I planted some garlic and its sprouting.




The rosemary is great.




The parsley is great.




The basil isnt growing. Any suggestions on what I should try to replace it with?




Im going to finally finish the plumbing for Pogos 105 gallon system this week. By next weekend we should have it filled with media and water. Well start fishless cycling, and hopefully be growing soon!
